Funding Opportunities


Foundation for Rural Education and Development A non-profit funding organization that seeks to provide resources for initiatives to enhance rural education and communities.
Investing in Inovation Fund (i3) Grants available for programs that improve student achievement.
Scale-up grants are available for projects that seek to "scale up" practices, strategies, or programs that have strong evidence for their effectiveness on improving student outcomes.
Validation grants are available for supporting practices, strategies, or programs that will improve upon programs that currently have moderate evidence for efficacy for improving various student outcomes.
Development grants are available for projects that seek to implement programs that will improve academic performance for or foster student growth, close achievement gaps, decrease dropout rates, increase high school graduation rates, or increase college enrollment and completion rates for high-need students.

Boooks for Children
Grants available for libraries serving rural communities. School libraries are eligible if they also serve as a public library. Application deadlines for 2014: January 23, May 15 and August 15.
Kimmel Foundation Grants available for programs and collaborative projects aimed at improving the life of people in rural communities in Nebraska and Iowa, with priority given to education-related efforts. (Grant guidelines)
National Education Association – Rural Grants Community development grants available through the National Education Association. Annual application deadline is February 15.
National Education Association – Student Achievement Grants Grants designed to improve the academic achievement of students in U.S. public schools and public higher education institutions in any subject area(s). Annual application deadlines: February 1, June 1 and October 15. (More information)
Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP; U. S. Dept. of Education) Grants designed for small districts that don't have the personnel and resources to compete for large federal grants. (Information about REAP eligibility and the application process.)
Technology Grants for Rural Schools These grants, created by The Foundation for Rural Education and Development, with sponsorship from the Rural Telephone Finance Cooperative, provide funding for projects that advance technology and foster cooperation among the telco, school and community.

National Research Center on Rural Educational Support This center was active from 2005-2010 and made possible through a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education. Their goals included researching effective interventions in rural schools and providing professional development opportunities for educators.
