The National Center for Research on Rural Education (R²Ed) is housed within the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences awarded UNL with a five-year grant for R²Ed in 2009.
R²Ed seeks to identify, develop and validate methods for helping teachers deliver research-based instruction in rural classrooms. The center specifically investigates how professional development opportunities influence teachers' knowledge, perceptions and practices – and their subsequent impact on student outcomes. It also explores the implementation of interventions and family-school partnerships aimed at improving students' academic performance.
